The Sahara around Merzouga can be visited all year, but the weather changes a lot between seasons. Choosing the right month makes a big difference to how much you enjoy camel rides, dune walks and nights under the stars.
The short answer
The most comfortable months are March to May and October to November. Days are warm (roughly 22 to 30°C), nights are cool, the sky is clear and the light on the dunes is beautiful.
Spring: March to May
Spring is one of the best times to visit. Daytime temperatures are pleasant, sunsets are long and golden, and after a wet winter you may even see the seasonal lake of Dayet Srji filled with water. Occasional sandy winds can blow in spring, so a scarf for your face is useful.
Summer: June to August
Summer is very hot, with afternoon highs often around 40°C or more. The desert is still spectacular, but plan activities for early morning and sunset, and rest in the shade in the middle of the day. Our tents have air conditioning, which makes summer nights much more comfortable.
Autumn: September to November
September is still hot, but from October the temperatures drop to a very comfortable level. October and November are ideal for camel treks, 4×4 excursions and sandboarding, with calm, clear nights that are perfect for stargazing.
Winter: December to February
Winter days are mild and sunny (often around 17 to 20°C), but nights in the desert are cold and can drop close to freezing. This is a quiet, magical season with crisp air and incredible stars. Bring warm layers: our tents are heated, so you will sleep warm.
Our tips for any season
- Do your camel ride at sunset or sunrise, when the light is softest and the sand is cool.
- Bring sun protection all year: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
- Book early for Christmas, New Year and Easter, our busiest dates.
- Stay at least two nights if you can, so you have a full day to explore the dunes, Khamlia and the nomad families.
