Wondering what to pack for the Sahara desert? Our checklist covers everything you need for a night in the dunes of Merzouga, whatever the season.
A night in a desert camp is one of the highlights of any trip to Morocco. Packing well makes it even better. Here is a simple list for your stay at our camp in Merzouga, based on what our guests find most useful.
Clothing
- Light, loose clothes that cover your shoulders and legs: they protect you from the sun and are respectful in local villages.
- A warm layer such as a fleece or light jacket. Even after a hot day, desert evenings get cool, and in winter nights can be close to freezing.
- A scarf or shesh to protect your face from sun and wind. You can also buy a traditional one locally and learn to tie it like a turban.
- Comfortable shoes and sandals. Sand gets everywhere, so sandals or easy-to-clean shoes are best on the dunes.
Sun protection
- Sunscreen with high protection, sunglasses and a hat.
- Lip balm and moisturiser: the desert air is very dry.
Useful extras
- A small backpack for the camel ride or 4×4 excursion.
- A reusable water bottle.
- A power bank. The tents have electricity, but a power bank is handy during excursions.
- A camera, and a zip bag to protect it from sand.
- Some cash in Moroccan dirhams for villages, souvenirs and tips. There are no cash machines in the dunes.
What you do not need to bring
Our luxury tents have real beds with bedding, a private bathroom with shower and toilet, air conditioning that also heats in winter, and free Wi-Fi. Dinner and breakfast are included. Sandboards are available free of charge at the camp.
Travelling with children
Families are very welcome. Children under 5 stay free, children from 5 to 12 pay 50%, and children over 12 pay the adult price. Bring a hat and extra sun protection for the little ones.

What to Pack for the Sahara Desert: Quick Checklist

- Light, long-sleeved clothes for the day
- A warm jumper or jacket for the evening (essential in winter)
- Comfortable closed shoes for walking on sand
- Sun cream, sunglasses and a hat or scarf
- A small bag with your essentials for one night
- Phone, charger and camera
- Any medicines you need and a small first-aid kit
- A reusable water bottle
- A torch or headlamp for walking around the camp at night
Pack light: a small backpack is easier to carry if you arrive at the camp by camel, and your main luggage can stay safely in your car or at your hotel.
Packing by season
From June to August, choose light, loose clothes that cover your arms and legs, and drink plenty of water. From December to February the days are pleasant but nights can be very cold, so pack layers, socks and a warm hat. In spring and autumn, a light jacket for the evening is usually enough.
